Why George?
In the beginning of the novel George appeared to be a very mean man. He yelled and cursed at Lennie a great deal. As i looked deeper into the character and observed his actions more versus his words i realized there was more to this character. George being complex is what made me choose him to analyse. I believe he was the best character for me to analyse do to his complexity and the way he changes through out the novel.
If I was to choose another character for this project it would have been Crooks. I would have chosen Crooks because he also has depth to him and would have been more challenging then other characters in the novel.

10 Words That Describe George
Angry- Through out the novel George curses at Lennie and gets mad when he forgets or does something wrong.
Unsatisfied- The whole novel is centered around George and Lennie working to save money to be able to buy a farm of their own. George is not satisfied with the life he currently has which is why he works so hard.
Guilty- George tricked Lennie which almost caused him drowned when they were younger and he feels bad, which is one of the reasons why he looks out for Lennie.
Leader- George figures out all the things that him and Lennie need such as food, shelter, jobs, etc. Lennie always follows George's lead.
Caring- Even though George yells at Lennie he always makes sure Lennie has what he needs. The ultimate action that showed how much he cares is when he shot Lennie himself instead of letting the other men kill him out of cruelty.
Protective- George may mess with Lennie, but he doesn't let anyone else mess with him. He always looks out for what is best for Lennie.
Regretful- There are times when George expresses regret for taking care of Lennie and not having an easy care free life.
Smart- George makes decisions that help make what he wants to happen possible; an example of this is when he was going to let Candy be a part of the farm with himself and Lennie.
Hard Working- George does manual labor on ranches to make money.
Defensive- When Candy started asking questions about the farm, George started questioning Candy in turn.

Pictures That Relate To George

I chose this picture because it shows when George shoots Lennie in the back of his head.
Quotes That Support The Theme
Work
Quote: "Go on out with the grain teams after dinner. They're pickin' up barley at the threshing machine."
Importance: This quote takes place when George and Lennie first arrive to the ranch, and they start to work. Through out the novel all the characters work on the ranch or talk about moving on to another ranch to work. Even when George talks about the farm him, Lennie, and Candy would get they would be working.
Friendship
Quote: "An' I got you. We got each other, that's what, that gives a hoot in hell about us"
Importance: From the very beginning George and Lennie are together. George is always looking out for Lennie when he makes a mistake or people get mad at him which is what a friend does.
Betrayal
Quote: "I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog."
Importance: There are many different cases of betrayal in the novel. Candy Betrayed his dog by letting Carlson kill him. Carlson killed the dog for the wrong reasons, verses if Candy had killed the dog it would have been through kindness.

Journal 4
He killed that tramp. I know he didn't mean to, hes jus too strong. the guys are going out to kill him. Its not right for some angry bastard to kill him. Maybe its my place, I am his only friend. That is what i am going to have to do kill the poor bastard. He'll be better off, he wont be causin me no more trouble or himself. I need to get my hands on a gun. Carlson has a luger i could take that, they will just think Lennie took it. I hate to lie on the man but it will benefit him in the end... I need to lead the other men away long enough to get to Lennie first. I'll tell them I had to wrestle the gun away from him. I guess this means no more farm, we were so close. I guess I'll have the life I wanted... No more running for the law, worrying about Lennie getting into trouble. I will miss him though, the cooky bastard kind of grows on you. This is the best though, for him and for me....
